THE EFFECT OF BAN ON X (FORMERLY TWITTER) ON NIGERIA CITIZENS
ABSTRACT: The primary objective of this research is to ascertain the underlying factors and consequences associated with the imposition of a Twitter ban on the residents of Nigeria, with specific emphasis on the Asaba city located in Delta state. The present analysis has identified the primary factors contributing to the imposition of the Twitter ban in Nigeria. The research study utilised a survey research strategy and conveniently recruited a total of 80 participants.A meticulously designed questionnaire was distributed to the participants, enabling them to offer responses that addressed the research inquiries. A total of 77 replies were collected and verified from the participants who were included in the study. It is important to note that all respondents were selected exclusively from Twitter Users residing in the Asaba Metropolis of Delta State. The hypothesis was evaluated using the Chi-Square statistical analysis method, specifically SPSS version 23. The study's findings indicate that the reason for the Twitter ban, as expressed by the minister of information, is attributed to the utilisation of Twitter as a medium for advancing secessionist agendas, along with the perceived dissemination of false information on the network. The study's findings also indicate that the existing ban on Twitter in Nigeria has had various effects on its citizens. These effects include the disruption of social interaction, negative impacts on businesses, loss of online customers for brands, reduction of the civic space, violation of fundamental human rights, and other consequential effects. Consequently, it is recommended that the Nigerian federal government should undertake a comprehensive reassessment of the prohibition on Twitter usage in Nigeria and make requisite revisions accordingly. The recognition of the adverse impact of the Twitter ban on many sectors of the Nigerian economy is a crucial consideration for the federal government. It is imperative that they conform to the conditions and regulations set forth by ECOWAS and rescind the prohibition, as it represents a violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens.
